Learning Outcome 2

In my final draft of project 1, I was able to use quotes from both my “Favorite Food Essay” and from Lizzie Widdicombe’s “The End of Food”. I used three different quotes and a paraphrase as evidence to help prove my position. In order to use quotes, I had to look through the essay and my annotations in order to find sections of text that would defend my claim. One issue that I have had in the past with my writing is integrating quotes. I tend to use the same phrase or two every time I introduce a new quote. By using the templates in “The Little Seagull”, I was able to use new phrases everytime I introduced a new quote. Explaining quotes was another problem my high school writing had. In Project 1, I made sure to make connections back to my main point throughout the essay.

This can be seen in my last quote which is in my fourth paragraph. I begin the paragraph by contrasting Rhinehart’s idea to my own idea. Then I explain the problem he was experiencing and I use a quote to show how he fixed the issue. After I state the quote, I explain what it was saying in my own words as well as explaining how Soylent affected his life in the long run. I then explain why Soylent can make life easier for someone who tends to have a busy life. The way I choose the quote, put it in the essay, and explained shows how my writing changed, even within the first few weeks of school.
